Elie Kanaan (1926-2009)
Description:

Elie Kanaan (1926-2009), Untitled, Oil on Canvas, 24 cm x 46.5 cm, , Signed, , Donated by a private collector

Elie Kanaan was born in Beirut in 1926.  He quickly became a self-educated painter with a unique and particular style. In his early works one can see his mastery in bringing bright colors together.  He won first prize in painting at the “Salon du Printemps” in 1957, as well as the UNESCO’s prize in 1958.  This paved the way for a fellowship in Paris with Jacques Villon, Yves Alix and many other renowned artists.  Abstraction took over the figurative after this experience.

His travels and exhibitions around Europe and the USA earned him world renowned fame.  He won a number of awards, notably first prize of oil-painting offered by the Sursock Museum in 1965.  Between 1963 and 1974, he taught drawing and painting at the college Notre-Dame de Jamhour and at the Lebanese University, and ALBA.

He continued to paint till the last moments of his life.  He passed away in 2009.  His works have been auctioned at world renowned auction houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s.
